Bishop's Address
June 1, 2011
If "it takes a village to raise a child," our children cannot help but be in trouble in and around Philadelphia, where 200,000 adults lack a high school diploma and 550,000, or one out of three, are functionally illiterate.
Mayor Michael Nutter cited these statistics during two meetings with religious leaders from across our five-county region at our cathedral earlier this year.
At the first gathering on January 25, I asked, "Your honor, what is really on your heart?" He replied, "Look, we can collect your trash and keep the snow off our streets, but how to get handguns out of our kids' hands, to stop them from killing each other, that's a huge question."

Thanks to an inventory of his home and studio conducted in July 1656, we know that Rembrandt kept in his bedroom two of his own paintings called Head of Christ. A third painting—identified as a “Head of Christ, from life” — was found in a bin in Rembrandt’s studio, awaiting use as a model for a New Testament composition.
