An Open Door and Many Adversaries: Thoughts on the Eve of Convention

November 2007

I will visit you after passing through Macedonia – for I intend to pass through Macedonia – and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you may send me on my way, wherever I go. I do not want to see you now just in passing, for I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. (1 Corinthians 16:5-9)

A New Way to Help Reach the Millennium Development Goals

The Church can act decisively to end world poverty. That was the message delivered by The Reverend Jay Lawlor, as the Episcopal Church Club of Philadelphia kicked off its new season of luncheons on Tuesday, September 18th. Father Lawler, formerly the Rector at St. Paul’s, West Whiteland, spoke about a new initiative for achieving the Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations with a target of completion by 2015.

Around 8:30 a.m., the yellow school bus leaves ECS St. Barnabas Mission for homeless women and children, lumbering over trolley tracks, through streets lined with row houses, some bright with swings and toys on the porch, others crumbling and abandoned.

Statement Concerning the Presentment and Inhibition Issued Against Bishop Bennison

On Tuesday, October 30, 2007, the members of the Standing Committee and Michael F. Rehill, Special Counsel to the Standing Committee, had a meeting with the Right Reverend F. Clayton Matthews, Bishop for Pastoral Development, Office of Pastoral Development of the Episcopal Church; David Beers, Chancellor to the Presiding Bishop; and his assistant, Mary E. Kostel. At that meeting Chancellor Beers permitted the members of the Standing Committee to read the Presentment against Bishop Bennison which had been issued the prior day, and gave them copies of a draft of the Inhibition which the Presiding Bishop intended to issue with the consent of a majority of the members of the Standing Committee. After a full and frank discussion, all ten members of the Standing Committee gave consent to the Inhibition.

Interfaith Gathering Shares Iftar Dinner at Cathedral

Approximately 90 people gathered at the Cathedral on Oct 11th, the evening before the end of Ramadan, to share an Iftar dinner. ‘Iftar’ is the breaking of the daily dawn-to-sundown fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The gallery, located at 704 Catharine Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is just three blocks below South Street.
